法医学は他の基礎系と違い、病理と並んで実務のある分野です。法医実務を学ぶと同時に、その時に直面する死因診断の困難さなどの問題や病態を解明する研究を行っています。法医学が関連する分野は広く、以下の様なものがあります。法医病理学、法医中毒学、法医画像診断学、生体法医学、法医歯科学、法医遺伝学。また近年では法医看護学や死因究明制度などの法律研究などの分野も出てきています。
