Profile (Career Summary)

Dr. Ito is the chief of Neuroendocrine Tumor Centre, Fukuoka Sanno Hospital and is also concurrently a professor at International University of Health and Welfare in Japan. His research interests focus on neuroendocrine tumors, pancreatic tumors and pancreatitis.

Dr. Ito graduated from Kyushu University in 1984, later specializing in pancreatology mainly working at Kyushu National Cancer Center and Kyushu University. In 1993, he acquired a Ph.D. (Medical Science). In 1996 he started to work at NIH for three years, where Dr. Robert T Jensen was his director at Digestive Disease Branch, NIH in the USA for work on gastrointestinal and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). Since then, Dr Ito and Dr Jensen collaborate lots of clinical and basic researches in the fields of NETs.

In 2000, Dr Ito became a chief of Pancreatic Disease Branch at Kyushu University and became associate professor. He conducted the nationwide survey of neuroendocrine tumors for the first time in Japan. He is a director of Japanese Pancreatic Society and Japanese Neuroendocrine Tumor Society. In 2017, he was appointed to be a chairman of the 2nd revision of Japanese NETs clinical guideline. 1n 2017 he moved to the present institution and hospital.
